2020 Book List

Favorite read of the year: The Autobiography of Malcolm X is by far my favorite read of the year. I am actually sad that I am just now reading this book at the age of 28 since I believe that this should be required reading in high school. It’s unfortunate how little I actually knew about his life before reading this novel, despite how visibly prominent he is when it comes to discussing activists and the Civil Rights Movement. Malcolm was a fascinating man and his life story identifies so many great themes of life. For example, the power of being self-taught, the complexities of family relationships, the role of law enforcement and media in communities, criminal life, and broadening your horizons to name a few. This will certainly be a book that I recommend everyone to read at some point in their life.

Most insightful read: Minda Harts x The Memo was so timely. I read this book in the midst of me switching roles in my career. She made sure that her business/self-help book didn’t fit the one-size fits all mold that many business/self-help books do. Minda found it important to tailor her story to women of color and explain the intricacies of the unique barriers that we deal with in corporate America. I loved that this book not only told her personal experiences, but also provided tangible resources from her tool kit. She listed out examples of prompts, assessments and tests to take, email templates, do’s and don’ts, people we should know and highlight, as well as other gems. I highly recommend to all women but specifically Black women who are trying to level up in their career.
